PORTLAND, USA

I'm in Portland, Oregon, doing some work for Nike. Portland is cool as hell!!!!! I stayed at the BEST HOTEL EVER - called Ace Hotel and just browsed books, drank coffee and watched films all day. I could totally live here, just for Powells bookshop alone...The weather is very much like England, not like Vegas where i got ill from the humidity! I'll do a travel lists for all the places I've been to soon.

WAH POWER LUNCH

Proper flyer to follow soon but SAVE THE DATE for our first WAH POWER LUNCH next month!!!

We having a networking event/partymashuprave at the ICA in London, one of my favourite cultural spots in the city. With guest speakers including creative maestro Kate Moross and Hannah Burgess, senior buyer at Topman and Sarah Lockhart of Tempa/Rinse FM/FWD...you can learn all about how we got our jobs in creative industries and tips on getting yourself and your work out there. We'll also have music provided by the Work It ladies and the Girlcore crew. I hope to make this a monthly event, so lets make the first one amazing!!

All the details are here.

PITBULL IN LIPSTICK??

Just because you're a girl, doesnt make it ok...Sarah Palin is really scary!! Her right wing views are against everything I stand for. The papers are slowly turning into an episode of Dynasty, with new dramas popping up every week. To those of in the UK who have not been following the Presidential race, you really ought to, as what those fuckers do affects us whether we like it or not!

Here are two of my fave Sarah Palin quotes -

On the Iraqi war - "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God."

On the Russia/Georgia conflict - "For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable"

On her insight into Russian actions (this one made me laugh out loud...) - "They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska"

And here is a really good article on why she's not good for feminism.

A LITTLE NOTE

I just wanna write a lee-til note about the tune below.... Isnt it beautiful? Doesnt it remind you of church? Improv keyboard arrangements while the preacher is talking calmly? Does me. Ketty Lester's "Love Letters" was arranged and produced by a West Coast legend Ed Cobb (co-with Lincoln Mayorga). I know I don't normally write about boys, but Ed Cobb has been the supporting crux for some of my favourite female bands and singers of all time. And he is cool as fuck. He was in an instrumental group called The Piltdown Men, named after the science hoax and anyone who names themselves after any hoax whatsoever, particularly a science one, is cool in my book.

More importantly, he penned many tracks that have had plenty of exercise on my ipod - Brenda Holloway's "Every Little Bit Hurts", "Tainted Love" for Gloria Jones, and 'Touch of Venus' for Sandy Wynns. AND THEN - if it wasnt enough to create some of the greatest soul classics of all time he goes and does American garage punk with Barracuda for the Standells (one point covered by The Jesus and Mary Chain)!

I love anything that crosses punk and soul/rnb. I love West Coast, I love Ed Cobb...

LOVE LETTER

DEATH LETTER

GOOD WEEK BAD WEEK

The more attentive of you will notice I've been AWOL of late. Aside from being busy working on lots of completely unrelated projects simultaneously, trying to sort out my flat and attempting (in vain) to grow my hair, I have also had THE WORST WEEK EVER. I wonder why this is: have the planets misaligned? Am I being punished for not going to church enough? Who knows. But last week Thursday it started out like this:

- crazy, scary accountant sends me bill (3 months after I fire him for being a wacko) for over a thousand pounds. He didnt even do my accounts.
- my MAC DIED!!!!!!!!!! noooooooooooo - this has happened before but not at such a crucial time!! I'm devastated and go to Simons to cry.
- On my way home from Simon's get para about scary accountant knowing where I live and call Alex to come over. He doesnt because he is a loser.
- Someone else picks me up, kindly and we spend a nice Friday together.

Friday is generally better despite it raining all day. I can feel a cold coming on which I ain't got time for so I call MK to let him know I cant come Bestival. Not taking a no for an answer, he makes me come and i spend Saturday and Sunday in the coldest, wettest, muddiest place. In felt like London in the diseased Victorian times. And the van was full of cigarette smoke. I wish I never went. I arrive back in London at 3am Sunday night, Inhale some fresh air and walk partway home.

Monday I wake up practically dying with what I think is glandular fever. Self diagnosis thanks to NHS helpline. Its Friday and I'm still really sick. Feels like I've been punched in the throat and chucked in a big tumble dryer, I'm all achy and sweaty. Nice! Another week wasted when I could be doing work. And this morning I get a phone bill for £500.30. I love my life.

To ease the pain I've been listening to tons of Madlib/Dilla/Oh No beat CDs that Adrian gave me years ago, wishing I was back in Cali with the sun shining on me. I've also listened to KMD's Black Bastards album 3 times and this particular song about 12 times....Enjoy!
